It was taken at Tergar Monastery in Bodhgaya about a week before the Kagyu Monlam, at the end of an interview. Karma Lodro and I were in a joint interview with Yeshe Wangmo and Michele Martin, which was mainly to discuss the torma film that Yeshe is working on. Karlo and I first presented Karmapa with our offerings, and some offerings from the Karme Ling retreatants and other people, and then Yeshe and Michele discussed the film with Karmapa. At the end of the interview, Karmapa asked Karlo and me if we had any questions, which we did not. So he asked if we wanted to have our picture taken, which of course we did! As we did not have our cameras (we had to leave them with security) one of his monks took the picture. We weren't sure how to get a copy of the picture, so we asked our friend Ngodrup Burkhar, former translator for Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, and currently one of Karmapa’s translators, to try to get the picture on a pen-drive which we provided. As you probably know if you listened to the Karmapa’s teachings at this monlam, the main things he emphasized were compassion, caring for the earth, and non-sectarianism (rimay), not only among Buddhist traditions, but genuine respect for all religions.
