宣公上人(宣化上人) : 「普賢」梵文為「三曼多跋陀羅 Samantabhadra」。三曼多,譯為「普」;跋陀羅,譯為「賢」。又有翻譯為「遍吉」。「遍」就是「普」,「普」也就是「遍」;「賢」就是「吉」,「吉」也就是「賢」。有兩個翻譯,雖然名詞不同,但意思是一樣的。普,是普遍。賢,因為普賢菩薩的果位已經接近極聖,只差佛一點點,好像十四夜的月亮,比十五夜的月亮,就差那麼一點點沒有圓明。
在諸菩薩中,普賢菩薩是地位最高的大菩薩之一。大悲觀世音菩薩、大願地藏王菩薩、大智文殊師利菩薩、大行普賢王菩薩,這是四大菩薩,來擁護釋迦牟尼佛的佛法。在法華會上,普賢菩薩是最後出來向法會的大眾講話,勸說大眾發菩提心,發心受持《妙法蓮華經》、讀誦《妙法蓮華經》、解說《妙法蓮華經》、書寫《妙法蓮華經》,勸大眾這樣子來流通這部《妙法蓮華經》。
因為普賢菩薩他是「大行」,他修行的行門最大,並且發的十大願王;以他的身份和地位,來勸說一切眾生發菩提心,擁護《妙法蓮華經》,一切的大眾都會相信這普賢菩薩所說的話,都來發大菩提心。In Sanskrit, "普賢" is translated as "三曼多跋陀羅 Samantabhadra." "三曼多" is translated as "普," and "跋陀羅" is translated as "賢." It can also be translated as "遍吉." "遍" means "普," and "普" means "遍"; "賢" means "吉," and "吉" means "賢." "普" signifies universality, and "賢" suggests the virtue of being close to ultimate enlightenment, akin to the moon on the fourteenth night, almost full but not quite.
Among all bodhisattvas, Samantabhadra is one of the highest-ranking. The four great bodhisattvas—Avalokiteshvara, Ksitigarbha, Manjushri, and Samantabhadra—work together to uphold the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha. During the assembly of the Lotus Sutra, Samantabhadra was the last to address the congregation, urging them to cultivate the mind of enlightenment, to uphold, recite, expound, and transcribe the Lotus Sutra, and to propagate it widely.
As Samantabhadra excels in virtuous conduct and has made ten great vows, his authority and status enable him to persuade all sentient beings to cultivate the mind of enlightenment and uphold the Lotus Sutra. All beings trust the words of Samantabhadra and aspire to great enlightenment.
